Conventional uptime monitoring might still report a healthy storefront because the domain and servers are available. Ecommerce-specific monitoring instead needs to observe front-end errors, shopper sessions, page performance, funnel progression, and checkout outcomes.
That is why it’s important not only to run QA tests before launching new features, pages, or campaigns, but also to continuously monitor your website to catch emerging issues before they start costing you sales and customers.
In this ecommerce QA checklist, we’ll cover what to test before a release, what to verify immediately after deployment, and what to monitor once real customers begin interacting with the change.
Why Pre-Release Ecommerce QA Isn’t Enough
Quality assurance, production smoke testing, and ecommerce bug monitoring are related, but they serve different purposes.
Pre-release QA confirms that a planned change works in the scenarios your team knows to test. Production smoke testing verifies that your most important customer journeys still function immediately after deployment. Finally, continuous ecommerce monitoring looks for problems that appear only under real-world conditions, such as a particular browser, device, payment method, app response, customer type, or geographic market.
Shopify recommends placing test orders during store setup and whenever payment settings change. These can help validate checkout, inventory, shipping, taxes, email notifications, and order processing and are an essential part of any Shopify QA checklist, but they still cover only the scenarios your team deliberately performs.
A release isn’t finished when you deploy your code; instead, it’s finished when critical production flows pass, and the monitoring data shows no damaging regression.
A more resilient ecommerce release process combines pre-release testing with ongoing production monitoring so you can watch how your releases behave over time as your store changes and you push more and more updates.
Ecommerce Release Checklist: Prepare Before Touching Production
Before you even open your browser and start clicking around, document the release scope and what it will affect. Depending on the release, this could include:

App versions, blocks, and embeds

Checkout extensions

Shopify Functions

Payment or shipping settings

Market configurations

For example, a loyalty app update might influence your product pages, the cart, discounts, customer accounts, checkout, and post-purchase point balances. Testing only the visible loyalty widget would leave most of the risk untouched, which you definitely don’t want.
Next, assign ownership and rollback authority for the release. Every release should have one owner who knows what changed, who approved it, and how to reverse it.
Specify who will test the release, who will monitor it, and who has authority to disable an app, restore a theme, pause a promotion, or roll back code. This way, if anything slips through the cracks, everyone knows who is responsible and no time gets wasted figuring out what to do or who will do it.
You’ll also want to record a performance and revenue baseline/small set of pre-release metrics like:

Ecommerce QA Checklist: What to Test Before Launch
The depth of testing should reflect the risk of the release. Obviously, updating a footer link doesn’t require the same process as replacing the cart, installing a subscription app, or changing payment logic.
This ecommerce release checklist covers the areas most likely to affect revenue:
1. Theme and Storefront QA
Test every important template affected by the release, including the homepage, collection pages, search, product pages, cart, customer account entry points, and campaign landing pages.
Check:

You can customize and preview your draft themes without affecting the live storefront. Some apps might not be compatible with a new or updated theme, so theme QA should include every app-controlled component.
2. App and Third-Party Script QA
For every installed, updated, removed, or reconfigured app, check that:

App blocks and embeds appear only where intended

Widgets load on every relevant template

Features work for guest and signed-in customers

The app doesn’t duplicate another widget, tag, pixel, or promotion

Consent settings allow or restrict data collection appropriately

Disabling the app doesn’t leave broken markup or abandoned scripts

Search, loyalty, reviews, subscriptions, tax, shipping, and discount apps don’t conflict

The release hasn’t caused a meaningful speed or responsiveness regression
This is also a good time to review how third-party scripts affect overall ecommerce performance. External scripts can add network requests, processing work, and dependencies that aren’t controlled by the theme itself. Double-check that any new additions aren’t meaningfully affecting your store and take steps to fix any slowdowns.
3. Cart, Checkout, and Payment Testing
Run complete journeys from product discovery to order confirmation. You’ll want to test:

Successful, declined, and incomplete payments

Different billing and shipping addresses

Cart changes before entering checkout

Shopify Payments test mode, Shopify’s test payment gateway (also referred to as the Bogus Gateway in some Shopify documentation), and supported third-party test modes can simulate successful and failed transactions without real charges. Note that you shouldn’t leave test mode active on a production store because it prevents normal live credit card orders. Some payment methods and POS hardware also require different testing methods, so you may occasionally need a real order followed by cancellation and refund.
4. Discount and Shopify Functions Testing
Promotions are tricky because they can occasionally create bugs that look like customer confusion. To combat this, build a test matrix covering things like percentage/fixed-amount discounts, product/order/shipping discounts, automatic discounts/entered codes, BOGO offers, minimum spending or quantity thresholds, discount combinations, etc.
Shopify supports combinations between eligible product, order, and shipping discounts. The available combinations and calculation order can affect the final total, so test every promotion using qualifying and non-qualifying carts.
This is extra important for merchants who completed a Shopify Scripts to Functions migration. As of June 30, 2026, Shopify Scripts is deprecated, and any Scripts that were still published were deactivated and no longer work.
Discount, shipping, and payment customizations previously handled by Scripts therefore needed to be transitioned to Shopify Functions or another compatible solution. Functions-based logic should have its own regression tests rather than being assumed to behave identically to the previous Script.
5. Shipping, Tax, and Market-Specific Testing
Shopify’s Markets and Managed Markets capabilities make it easier than ever to expand internationally, but they can also add blind spots to your release QA and testing process.
Run your tests across localized storefronts and in different currencies. Your best bet is to use test addresses representing things like remote regions, restricted destinations, local delivery/pickup zones, free shipping thresholds, and different tax jurisdictions to confirm that the correct rates, taxes, duties, currencies, languages, catalogues, product availability, prices, and market-specific content appear.
Shopify shipping results can depend on product details, inventory locations, markets, shipping profiles, packaging, carrier accounts, and third-party rate providers. Shopify Markets can also customize currency, language, product availability, pricing, theme content, checkout profiles, and account experiences.
Changing the shipping address during checkout should also trigger the expected recalculations.
6. Customer Account, B2B, and POS Testing
Shopify’s current customer accounts use a one-time six-digit email code rather than a password, while deprecated legacy accounts use email-and-password authentication. Current accounts can also include social sign-in, self-serve returns, store credit, saved information, and app extensions.
Before big releases, review sign-in/authentication, order history, saved addresses, loyalty/subscription details, and your confirmation/notification emails to ensure everything still works and content is still relevant.
For Shopify B2B, create a test company and verify its catalogue, pricing, company location, payment terms, permissions, and checkout configuration. Shopify recommends confirming expected prices, terms, and checkout settings through B2B test orders.
Omnichannel merchants should also complete a Shopify POS test transaction and confirm that orders, customers, inventory, receipts, taxes, returns, and locations synchronize correctly.
7. Analytics and Customer Event Testing
Double-check that key events like products being viewed/added/removed from cart, checkout started/completed, consent preferences, and searches performed are still firing correctly.
Look for missing events, duplicated purchases, incorrect order values, and data that reaches one platform but not another.
Shopify offers a Pixel Helper tool that can test app and custom pixel events in real time. It also reports errors and can verify checkout completion events by placing a test order.
Run a Controlled Production Smoke Test
Right before deployment, you should:

Confirm the backup or previous version is available

Pause unrelated store changes

Record the release time and version

Confirm monitoring and alerts are active

Keep rollback instructions accessible
Shopify’s new Rollouts feature also allows eligible merchants to schedule changes to their main theme, checkout, and customer account experience, or run experiments that compare changes against a control before a full launch. Rollouts are available on Basic plans and higher, while experiments require Grow or higher. Keep in mind that Rollouts don't support headless or custom storefront checkouts, vintage themes, or changes to Liquid templates.
Monitor Ecommerce Revenue After Every Release
After deployment, watch both technical and commercial signals.
Technical signals include new JavaScript, HTTP, GraphQL, API, and image errors; endpoint failures; slower page performance; and browser-specific issues.
Commercial signals include checkout completion, conversion rate, revenue per session, payment failures, cart abandonment, promotion complaints, and changes in customer-service contacts.
You can also use a tool like Noibu to connect detected issues with affected sessions, funnel progression, and estimated revenue loss. Its estimates consider factors such as impacted sessions, conversion drop-off, funnel progression, average cart value, and how long an issue has been present.

It goes without saying that not every issue that pops up during a new launch needs an emergency rollback. Instead, consider a prioritization model like:

Critical: Customers broadly can’t create carts, complete checkout, pay, or see accurate prices. Roll back or disable the affected feature immediately.

High: A major market, browser, payment method, shipping region, or promotion is blocked. Mitigate quickly and consider a partial rollback.

Medium: The bug creates friction for a smaller segment but doesn’t fully block purchases. Prioritize it based on traffic and revenue exposure.

Low: The defect is cosmetic or has no measurable funnel impact. Log it, monitor it, and include it in planned maintenance.
Set rollback triggers before deployment. These might include a failed smoke test, a significant checkout-completion decline, a release-linked payment error, or the loss of an important market or payment method.
