From tax credits for innovation and R&D to grants for digital transformation, hiring, training, and export growth, Ontario-based ecommerce businesses have access to funding that can make major projects far more attainable.
Whether you are a startup building your online presence or an established merchant looking to scale, the right mix of support can reduce risk, improve cash flow, and help you grow faster. The problem? Finding these programs (and determining whether or not you qualify for them) can be a bit tricky.
In this guide, we break down the most relevant ecommerce tax credits, grants, loans, and government support programs available to Ontario businesses in 2026, along with how they can be used to fund online growth.
Ontario Provincial Ecommerce Tax Credits and Programs
Here are the best ecommerce-related programs and tax credits you can use to fund the expansion of your business this year:
Grants & Subsidies for Ontario Ecommerce Merchants:
-
Retail Modernization Project Grant (RMPG): If you’re a retailer/omnichannel retailer with under 50 employees, you can receive a $5,000 matched grant to purchase and implement digital tools (ecommerce software, point of sale systems, inventory tech, cybersecurity, AI customer tools, etc.). The goal of this Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI) grant is to enable retailers to digitize their operations to better serve their customers and expand beyond their B&M location(s).
-
Digital Modernization & Adoption Plan (DMAP): Another OCI grant, the DMAP offers up to $15,000 for a digital adoption plan to implement new technologies (ERP, CRM, ecommerce platforms, AI tools, etc.). Businesses with fewer than 499 employees that can explain why they need a digital strategy can apply for this grant.
-
Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG): Ontario & federal governments cover training costs for employers. Businesses can get up to $10,000 per employee for approved short-term training. This can be used to upskill staff in ecommerce platforms, digital marketing, customer service software, etc. Employers with 100 or more employees are required to cover half the training costs, while small businesses with fewer than 100 employees are required to cover 1/6 of the costs.
Tax Credits for Ontario Ecommerce Businesses:
-
Ontario Innovation Tax Credit: An 8% refundable tax credit based on the sum of the corporation's qualified expenditures incurred in Ontario and any eligible repayments. Eligible businesses can earn a maximum tax credit amount of $240,000 if eligible to claim the federal tax credit under section 127 of the Canadian Income Tax Act and have filed a scientific research and experimental development expenditures claim on federal form T661 for the tax year.
-
FedDev Ontario: Businesses in Southern Ontario with between 5 and 500 full-time employees that have been incorporated and registered to do business in Ontario for at least the last 3 years can apply for repayable contribution funding between $125,000 and a maximum of $10 million per project. Eligible project costs are shared between you and FedDev Ontario for activities including:
-
Scaling up or expanding business lines to tap into new markets or reach new customers
-
Improving productivity, capacity and competitiveness
-
Developing, commercializing and/or producing new and innovative products, processes and services
-
Ontario Co-Operative Education Tax Credit: Hiring students from a qualifying post-secondary co-operative education program provides a tax refund (25-30% of wages, up to $3,000). This credit is great for digital marketing or IT interns. The placement must be for at least 10 consecutive weeks, except that, in the case of an internship program, the placement cannot be less than 8 consecutive months and more than 16 consecutive months.
Federal Support Options
-
CanExport SMEs: This program provides funding up to $50,000 to support international business development activities. It is ideal for businesses with fewer than 500 employees and annual revenue between $300,000 and $100 million.
-
Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) Tax Incentive: Companies engaged in R&D can claim this federal tax credit. Qualified Canadian-controlled corporations may receive a refundable credit of up to 35% on the first $3 million of eligible R&D expenses, claimed via the federal corporate tax return.
-
BDC 0% Interest Loan: Companies already approved under Canada’s Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) can access a zero-interest loan of up to $100,000 from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). This loan is intended to fund the purchase of new technology, including software, hardware, or services necessary for online growth. (Note: CDAP is no longer accepting new applications.)
-
National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP): NRC IRAP offers tailored advice and valuable connections. It also provides occasional funding to SMEs to overcome business and technical challenges and accelerate the commercialization of products and services. This program is suitable for companies employing up to 500 people that develop and commercialize innovative, technology-driven products or services.
As we mentioned in our grant and tax credit guide for Quebec merchants, stacking provincial and federal funding can often result in large sums of money or credit, sometimes up to 60% - 70% of project costs, that you can put towards different aspects of your business.
For example, apply SR&ED tax credits on R&D while also using an Ontario digital grant for your ecommerce platform.
Conclusion
Whether you are investing in new digital tools, training your team, expanding into new markets, or developing innovative technology, there are programs available to help offset costs and make those initiatives more feasible.
The key here is knowing where to look and how to combine the right opportunities. In many cases, provincial and federal programs can work together, helping merchants recover a meaningful portion of project costs while accelerating growth.
