Ecommerce brands looking to partner with a Shopify agency have never been short on options. Search for a Shopify development agency, and you’ll find everyone from individual developers and boutique studios to global systems integrators.

Shopify’s Partner Program, however, is designed to make that decision easier for merchants of all sizes with a variety of needs, from a simple theme design project to a fully customized ecommerce ecosystem with specific requirements and many moving parts.

In 2025, Shopify introduced a new tiered Partner Program for service partners, with five levels: Registered, Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum. The tiers are based on demonstrated commercial impact and are intended to help merchants understand the scale and complexity at which a partner operates.

At the very top sits the Shopify Platinum Partner tier.

In this blog, we’ll break down what Shopify Platinum Partner status actually means for an ecommerce brand, and if it should influence which agency you hire.

Shopify Plus Partner vs. Platinum Partner: What’s the Difference?

A Shopify Platinum Partner is a service partner that has reached the highest tier of Shopify’s current Partner Program by demonstrating sustained commercial impact at enterprise scale.

Shopify describes Platinum Partners as organizations that operate “at scale with sustained impact across enterprise merchants.” By comparison, Shopify describes Plus Partners as delivering impact across “more complex merchant needs,” while Premier Partners operate across larger and more complex merchant environments.

Platinum status isn’t just a badge that an agency can apply for or purchase. Shopify evaluates partner performance against defined revenue and merchant-acquisition thresholds, and updates partner tiers quarterly.

Shopify sunsetted its former Plus Partner Program in December 2024. Today, “Plus Partner” refers to the Plus tier within Shopify’s newer tiered Partner Program, while Shopify Plus remains the platform for larger, more complex merchants.

How Does an Agency Become a Shopify Platinum Partner? - Shopify Partner Tier Breakdown

Platinum status is earned through demonstrated commercial impact. Shopify evaluates both the revenue from the merchants a partner brings to the platform and the revenue from the merchants the partner continues to support.

Shopify considers the stronger of those two revenue dimensions, along with a mandatory merchant-acquisition requirement. Here are the revenue and merchant plan requirements for each tier:

  1. Registered: The starting tier for Shopify Partners. No commercial-impact threshold is required to maintain this level.

  2. Select: ≥ $100,000 USD in new referral and co-sell revenue OR ≥ $500,000 USD in existing merchant revenue, AND ≥ 1 Plus/Enterprise merchant or ≥ 10 Standard-plan merchants.

  3. Plus: ≥ $500,000 USD in new referral and co-sell revenue OR ≥ $2,500,000 USD in existing merchant revenue, AND ≥ 2 Plus/Enterprise merchants or ≥ 40 Standard-plan merchants.

  4. Premier: ≥ $2,000,000 USD in new referral and co-sell revenue OR ≥ $10,000,000 USD in existing merchant revenue, AND ≥ 4 Plus/Enterprise merchants.

  5. Platinum: ≥ $5,000,000 USD in new referral and co-sell revenue OR ≥ $25,000,000 USD in existing merchant revenue, AND ≥ 6 Plus/Enterprise merchants.

For 2026, Shopify has waived credential requirements, so tier evaluations are based only on commercial activity.

Revenue impact is measured over a trailing five-year window. For merchant acquisition, however, Premier and Platinum Partners must meet their requirements within the trailing two years, compared with five years for Select and Plus.

“Standard plans” here refer to Basic, Grow, and Advanced. Plus and Enterprise refer to higher-complexity merchant engagements. Shopify counts only net-new Shopify merchants; it doesn’t include expansion stores when considering your tier.

Why choose a Shopify Platinum Partner agency?

A Shopify Partner tier should never be your only criterion for choosing an agency. A Platinum badge doesn't automatically mean one agency fits every merchant, industry, budget, or project.

For enterprise-sized and high-growth brands, this can matter in a few different ways:

1. Proven experience with enterprise-scale Shopify projects and omnichannel commerce

The most obvious advantage of working with a Platinum agency is experience: Shopify positions Platinum Partners around enterprise merchants, making them a great choice for large, complex, and long-term ecommerce projects.

Any agency worth their salt can install a theme and connect a handful of apps to a small ecommerce store, but brands looking for enterprise-sized implementations (ERP and PIM integrations, custom middleware, Shopify POS, B2B requirements, multiple storefronts or markets, complicated product data, legacy systems, custom applications, accessibility requirements and extensive migration work, for example) would benefit the most from working with a Platinum agency.

Omnichannel ecommerce is rarely simple. A customer might browse online, purchase in a store, return through another location and expect their account, inventory, promotions and customer experience to remain consistent throughout the process.

That creates challenges across POS, ERP, PIM, inventory, fulfilment, customer data, and integrations, and it requires an agency with experience building and maintaining the scaffolding that holds your ecommerce store together.

Blue Badger’s work with Laura Canada is a good example. Our team supports its headless Shopify Plus environment and worked on a Shopify POS implementation across 200 retail locations, alongside Akeneo PIM implementation, custom integrations and other ecommerce infrastructure.

If you’re pursuing unified or omnichannel commerce, look for a partner with demonstrated experience connecting the systems involved in your specific environment. Platinum status can indicate enterprise-scale activity, but case studies and relevant technical experience better demonstrate omnichannel capability.

2. Experience migrating businesses to Shopify Plus

Building a portfolio of ecommerce merchants using Shopify often involves replatforming them from another ecommerce platform, and as any brand that has moved platforms can tell you: replatforming an established ecommerce business is fundamentally different from launching a new store.

You need to consider customer and order data, products and variants, URLs and SEO equity, integrations, analytics, promotions, ERP connections, redirects, apps, checkout functionality, and the operational workflows employees depend on every day.

At Blue Badger, our portfolio includes migrations from Adobe Commerce and Magento to Shopify Plus. For Blush Lingerie, for example, our team migrated the business to Shopify Plus, built a custom storefront, supported a NetSuite integration and developed custom functionality for complex promotions.

3. Greater access to Shopify resources

While Plus-level agencies have access to some Premier and Platinum benefits, most of them are invite-only. Only Platinum partners are guaranteed access to all available benefits. Those benefits are:

  1. A listing in the Shopify Partner Directory

  2. Access to a Partner Success Manager

  3. Market development funds

  4. Partner development funds

  5. Priority access to Shopify teams

  6. Strategic collaboration and growth planning

For merchants, the value here is the relationship behind the partner badge. These benefits give the agency additional avenues to collaborate with Shopify on complex merchant requirements.

This is especially useful when the project involves enterprise architecture, new Shopify capabilities, complex integrations, or a roadmap that extends far beyond launch day.

4. A better fit for complicated ecommerce ecosystems

Like experience with omnichannel and enterprise-scale commerce, Platinum agencies know how to ensure every service, tool, and platform connected to your Shopify account is properly integrated, works as it should, and serves your business in a way that justifies the cost.

A Platinum Partner tier doesn’t certify expertise in every individual technology. Instead, it indicates that the agency operates at the commercial scale Shopify associates with enterprise merchants.

When evaluating an agency, it’s also worth looking at its relationships with the other technology providers in your stack. Blue Badger, for example, works across platforms and tools including Shopify, Akeneo, Adobe Commerce, Klaviyo, Gorgias, and Noibu, which can matter when those technologies form part of a broader ecommerce ecosystem.

When should you consider a Shopify Platinum Partner?

Even as a Platinum partner agency ourselves, we can confidently say that not every Shopify merchant absolutely needs to work with a Platinum-certified Shopify agency.

If you need a simple theme customization, run a small Shopify store or have a narrowly defined development task, hiring a Platinum agency purely because it has the highest partner tier may be unnecessary.

Shopify itself describes the tiers in terms of increasing scale and complexity. Its Partner Directory says Plus Partners generally suit mid-market and larger businesses, Premier Partners suit large enterprises, and Platinum Partners suit global enterprise businesses.

Instead of asking whether an agency is a Platinum Partner, consider whether they have proven experience solving the type and scale of ecommerce problems you have. A Platinum Partner is particularly worth considering when your Shopify project involves multiple layers of business and technical complexity.

That might include a Shopify Plus migration, large-scale redesign, ERP or PIM integration, custom application development, Shopify POS rollout, B2B commerce, international expansion, headless commerce, multiple brands or storefronts, complicated product architecture, conversion optimization or long-term Shopify support and maintenance.

Generally. If the storefront is only part of the problem, consider an agency that understands how Shopify fits into the larger ecommerce ecosystem and how implementation decisions will affect operations long after launch. That's often a Platinum Partner agency.

What should you ask before hiring a Shopify Platinum Partner agency?

If you’re considering hiring a Shopify Platinum agency, you’ll want to do your homework and ensure that the one you choose has the relevant skills and experience you need for your particular project(s).

Ask potential agencies to show you comparable projects. Find out who will actually work on your account, what capabilities are handled in-house, how the agency approaches discovery and architecture, and what happens after launch.

For a complex Shopify project, some of the most useful questions include:

  • Have you worked with merchants of our size and complexity?

  • Have you integrated Shopify with our ERP, PIM, POS or other core systems?

  • How do you approach Shopify Plus migrations and data migration?

  • What is your process for custom Shopify development?

  • How do you manage QA, accessibility and performance?

  • How do you prevent unnecessary app dependencies and technical debt?

  • Can you support our store after launch?

  • How do you approach CRO and ongoing optimization?

  • Who owns the code, documentation and custom integrations you build?

  • What does your escalation process look like when a Shopify-specific issue arises?

The Platinum Partner badge is only one small part of choosing a Shopify agency. You still need to vet the team and ensure that their skills align with your needs.

Blue Badger is now a Shopify Platinum Partner

As of 2026, Blue Badger is officially a Shopify Platinum Partner agency.

For us, the milestone is less about changing what we call ourselves and more about what the designation represents: years spent building, migrating, integrating and optimizing Shopify ecommerce ecosystems for brands with increasingly complex requirements.

Our Shopify work spans custom website design and development, Shopify Plus migrations, Shopify POS implementations, custom apps and integrations, ERP and PIM connectivity, conversion rate optimization, support and maintenance, and omnichannel ecommerce.

More importantly, Platinum status reflects the kind of Shopify work we want to keep doing: solving complicated problems for merchants that have outgrown simple solutions.

Conclusion

Shopify Platinum Partner status isn’t a guarantee that an agency will be the right partner for every project, but it’s a strong indicator of skill and experience across the Shopify platform, from simple store setup to the complex integrations and customization enterprise brands rely on every day.

Under Shopify’s current Partner Program, Platinum represents the highest service-partner tier and requires significantly greater commercial impact and more recent enterprise merchant acquisition than the Plus tier. It also offers deeper access to Shopify teams, resources, and strategic collaboration.

If you’re running a complex ecommerce business, planning a Shopify Plus migration, connecting online and retail operations, rebuilding an ageing technology stack, or trying to make several business-critical systems work together, a Platinum Agency has the proven track record you need to keep your store running smoothly, with plenty of room to grow.
